Porcelain crowns are metal free and they closely resemble natural teeth because of their translucent surface color and luster. The size and shape can be carefully matched to complement the rest of your smile. Porcelain crowns are typically used in the front of the mouth. Porcelain crowns are also ideal for those patients with metal allergies.

Porcelain and Metal Crowns Dental crowns made of porcelain fused to metal are typically stronger than all-porcelain version and more aesthetically pleasing than an all metal crown. The crowns made by Dr. Chalmers have a base of high noble metal, meaning the crowns are composed of a stronger metal that will not discolor as the crown ages. The portion of the crown that extends to the gums is wrapped in porcelain. The durability of the porcelain crown makes it suitable for restoring teeth in either the front or back of the mouth. Porcelain crowns can also be custom shaded to ensure an exact match with your other teeth.

Gold Crowns Although the gold color makes them a poor choice for highly visible teeth, dental crowns made of metal can be an ideal option for repairing decayed or damaged back teeth. They are extremely durable and can be valuable for those patients who have heavy bite forces on their back teeth. A gold crown can be gentler on opposing teeth and are less susceptible to wear and chipping than porcelain crowns.
