Oral Cancer Screening Sacramento, CA

The two-minute exam that could save your life, VELscope®.

VELscope Oral Cancer Screening
VELscope is the trusted and proven piece of technology that Dr. Chalmers uses to check oral tissue for signs of developing diseases. It is “the only non-invasive adjunctive device clinically proven to help discover occult oral disease.” So how does VELscope work and why is it so effective? Well, it couldn’t be any easier. A special frequency of blue light is calibrated to interact with the soft tissues of the mouth. When it is shown over healthy tissue, it illuminates in a bright green glow. When this light is shown over damaged or potentially suspicious regions, they remain dark and unaffected. Using VELscope allows us to recognize and investigate even the smallest tissue abnormalities, those that would be impossible to detect with the naked eye alone.

In addition to receiving regular screenings, patients should take an everyday role in their oral health by being able to recognize the early warning signs of oral cancer. These may include unusual lumps, lesions that don’t seem to heal, or any prolonged red or white discolorations (all mouth tissues are usually a healthy shade of pink). Those with an elevated risk for oral cancer include males over 40, tobacco and/or alcohol users, and those with a family history of cancer.

The single most important factor for successful cancer treatment is early detection, so there is no reason to not make an oral cancer screening part of your regular health routine. So please, contact us today for more information or to schedule a consultation.

FAQs About VELscope®

Why VELscope®?

The VELscope system helps dental professionals visualize abnormalities in the mucosal tissues of your lips, mouth and upper throat. In just two minutes, with no rinses, stains or discomfort, a VELscope examination lets healthcare professionals improve their assessment of your overall oral health.

Make sure that your mouth is as healthy as it can possibly be. The next time you visit your dentist or hygienist, ask for a VELscope exam.

How does the VELscope® work?

The VELscope’s blue light “excites” molecules (called “fluorophores”) deep within the layers of oral mucosal tissues. In turn, those fluorophores emit their own light (fluorescence), in shades of green, yellow and red. The VELscope’s proprietary filter makes fluorescence visualization possible, by blocking reflected blue light, and by enhancing the contrast between normal and abnormal tissue.
